Public Speaking
During out intensive classes in Kenya, we had class debates and took turns speaking on a variety of topics that we were given to discuss. This was a good introduction to public speaking because we knew our audience and it was also small, yet having to stand up and defending your size.
While I was in Haiti, I told stories and taught
children songs to all the children that came to
our evangelism series. We held an Evangelism
series at a church we were in the process of
building in the mountain community. This was
such a unique experience we had so many children
show up and they looked so intently at me. I knew
they were laughing at me a lot of the time but I
just tired to roll with it and laugh at myself as well.
Speaking through a translator is also an unique
experience. The timing of things can become
strange.
We had a wide variety of a presentations during
our intensive classes in Kenya. We had to create
powerpoint presentations, posters, and a variety
of visual aids and present talking points.
This was an experience of public speaking and
being able to effectively use visual aids.
Being able to effectively speak to a crowd,
holding their attention, and getting your points
across while effectively using visual aids is an
important skill. People who speak with visual
aids often end up getting distracted by them or
distracting the audience from what they are trying
to say. The visual aids should enhance what you
are saying not detract from it.
Speaking in Class is one of the biggest ways we have learned to public speak. Learning amongst peers is a great way to get over the fear of speaking in front of people while gaining experience. It is easier to practice public speaking in front of an audience that is just as nervous and unsure about their performance as well.
Speaking at Church is a one of the biggest public speaking engagements I had. I was able to share about my experiences in Africa. I was definitely nervous but was so glad I got to share my experiences with people in my home community. It was a unique experience as most of my church members are from the places that I had been and talked about. One of the ladies actually grew up in the village that I lived in.

Cross Cultural Sensitivity
Walking with the poor book report shows that there are differences and culture that can be learned when spending time with others that are different from you. There is a lot that can be learned a and appreciated when we spend time with others.
Different cultures often eat different things than we
are used to and we can learn a lot about where
someone comes from by sharing their food. It is
something that can bring us all together, because
everyone likes food. Food can tell you about where
someone is from based on what is available in
that region, what is grown there, the spices they use, etc.
Every culture has things that they wear that work for their climate, culture, and lifestyle. I think we can learn a lot about someone by learning why they wear what they wear and seeing the beauty in it. I think it is important, especially when you are a guest in a new culture, to dress appropriately to
the culture. I don't think we always need to conform completely, but if the women cover their shoulders, cover your shoulders. Dress as modestly as possible in all situations. Take cues from the locals dress according to what they are wearing as to not distract or take away from your credibility.
Productivity Promoting
Keeping in touch online and sharing our
meeting minutes as helped keep each
other on track and help keep productivity going.
This is a good way to promote productivity
because it keeps everyone on the same page.
One of the biggest ways to keep things
productive the biggest part is communication.
If people are not all aware of what is going on
that is when miscommunications start
happening. People do things incorrectly,
double work starts happening and this creates
loss of productivity, time, and money.
It is important to keep notes at meetings
and make sure that you are getting things
accomplished and not just wasting time
doing them same things.
Taking minutes is important but also
sharing the minutes with everyone involved
is important too because it reminds people
of their responsibilities and what they
need to do before the next meeting.
I try to keep detailed notes about what
is happening with work and different
projects so that I can stay on track
with what I need to do as well as
where we are in a project as a whole.
I take notes on meetings, projects,
things I am learning. Really anything
this helps me stay on track and make
sure I don't forget things. It also allows
me to multitask on a variety of projects
at once.
Keeping in touch with supervisors and other coworkers about projects and what is needed to be done is important. I am a goal orientated person so keeping lists of what needs to be done and what needs to be done to accomplish each other those tasks keeps me focused and working hard.
